Current Connections

A. Germantown Friends School has many connections to its surrounding community through activities such as community involvement projects and field trips. For more information on these existing connections, please see documents in Existing Connections folder of Unit Materials folder.

>Note: Many of these documents may not be comprehensive, GFS has many varied connections with other individuals and organizations, some of which may not have been included.

   1. documents in Existing Connections folder include:

      a. a summary of Janet Kalkstein's 6th grade classes partnership with Center in the Park

      b. a chart listing classes at GFS that relate to urban studies topics

      c. a chart listing sites that GFS students have visited recently for community involvement projects including Middle School Project Times and Work Days

      d. a list of some community groups connected to GFS

      e. the PAIS Standard 14 write up for GFS, which includes a rather thorough list of groups connected to GFS and how they are connected to GFS

Potential Activities

A. establishing context

   1. readings, discussion questions, and activities to help students understand the broader social issues that they might address or encounter at different service sites

      a. these could be used by an instructor or chaperone before a project to help students prepare to process their service experiences in more depth, or scattered throughout a long term project

      b. see materials: ReadingQuestions_EstablishingContextOfService document

B. on site

   1. activities:

      a. Appropriate on site activities could vary widely from site to site, however some common goals for almost all types of sites include allowing students and chaperones to learn about the community they are serving and getting to know their peers in new ways. These goals could be achieved through all sorts of conversations and interactions and could be facilitated through ice breaker games, scavenger hunts, and other activities.

      b. For some examples of activities please see the following.

C. post-project activities

   1. Opportunities for reflection and discussion after service projects can help students deepen their understandings and express comments and concerns. Activities that facilitate this include group discussions in which students talk about what they did and learned; writing thank you notes to the site host, expressing what students learned and enjoyed; and post-project surveys (see Unit Materials, Community Involvement Projects & Resources, Post Service Surveys)
